Car insurance costs have
rocketed in recent years. According to the confused.com/Towers Watson
Index, premiums have gone up an eye-watering 61 per cent for motorists
in just five years.
This
means that getting a car in a low insurance group is priority for many -
especially younger drivers who face premiums that can cost thousands of
pounds.
And with the
EU gender ruling set to come into force in December, which will mean
that insurers can’t discriminate on sex when it comes to pricing,
drivers may be hunting even harder for cars that cheaper to insure.

Insurance costs: With premiums costing 61% more than five years ago, we round-up the cheapest options
Insurance on motors is set by groups – if a car is in insurance group one, for example, it is cheaper to get cover.
As
well as being cheap for cover, the motors listed below – five new cars
and five that are three-years old – are economical, as they have smaller
engines.
In a time of
high petrol prices – in April, both diesel and unleaded hit record highs
and the price is only slowly sliding back – getting more miles for your
money is important.
The
below cars also made the list for the value of the motor, the relative
ease of getting parts (making them cheaper to replace if needed) and for
being great runabout vehicles.
This
is Money, alongside car experts Glass’s, round-up the top ten cheapest
cars to insure. The list is in no particular order because some models
will be cheaper to cover with different insurance firms.
TOP FIVE NEW CARS TO INSURE:
Chevrolet Spark 1.0 H/b 5d - £7,320
The
Spark is a practical city car and this model falls falls into the group
one insurance category, making it an ideal first time car for cheap
insurance costs.
It does an economical 55.4 MPG, but it isn't the nippiest car on the road - and it also has a fairly small boot.

Fiat Panda 1.1 Active ECO H/b 5d - £7,905
WhatCar? says that the Panda is, 'funky-looking, both fun and easy to drive. To cap it all, it won't cost much to run.'
This
motor falls into insurance category one - but its small size compared
to other superminis means that that there is a lack of legroom in the
back of the car.

Volkswagen Fox 1.2 Urban H/b 3d - £8,360
The Fox falls into insurance category one. According to WhatCar? it is 'decent to drive and offers good performance.'
The
Volkswagen badge means the motor keeps its value well, but Auto Express
says that, 'if you want neat details and stylish design, the Fox isn’t
the car for you.'

Fiat Qubo 1.4 Active MPV 5d - £11,260
The
Qubo divides opinion with its cube-looking design. It looks compact
from the outside, but it's actually deceptively spacious on the inside.
WhatCar? says it is, 'comfortable, easy to drive and decently refined.' The car falls into car insurance category two.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.0i 12v ecoFLEX S3d - £11,915
The 1.0-litre petrol engine manages well over 55mpg - so it is economical, while it also falls into insurance category two.
However,
WhatCar does note that the engine is noisy and slow – it takes 17
seconds to haul the Corsa to 62mph, so the model is certainly not for
any speed demons.

HOW TO GET THE CHEAPEST CAR INSURANCE
Shop around for
the best deals. Savings of hundreds of pounds can be found if you shop
around when you renew your cover, but the experts say you need to obtain
at least seven quotes to get the best deal, although most people get
only three.
Be careful though. When shopping around for car insurance, it's important to make sure that you are comparing like-for-like cover. Some policies may seem cheaper, but you may find you don't have the same level of cover when you have to make a claim.
And if you're a woman or a mature driver, it might be worth checking out one of the tailored policies on offer to certain groups. Read our guide on how to get the cheapest car insurance for more tips.

Toyota Yaris 1.0 VVT-i T2 H/b - £5,649

thing. While most superminis have grown, the Yaris keeps the emphasis on
the ‘mini’. So it’s light and nippy.'
The car falls into insurance category
two and the Toyota is a sought after badge - in a recent Warranty
Direct report of family cars, three of its models came in the top ten
for reliability.

Smart fortwo 1.0 Pure Coupe 2d 2 - £5,999
The
biggest draw of the Smart fortwo is it's ability to park where some
cars would have no chance - ideal for the city. Both the running costs
and emissions are very low.
The car is in insurance category two - WhatCar? says the trouble with this motor is the fact it's noisy and poor to drive.
