BMW X7 Rumored as New Flagship SUV

Buckle up for more rumors in the BMW world. The usual and old-time suspect Scott27, returns with more rumors, but this time, the speculations go beyond what we have seen so far. If news around an M2 or front-wheel-drive are starting to make sense and align with BMW’s plans to conquer the world of premium automobiles,  these latest rumors focus quite a bit on SUVs, in contrast to the company’s direction in the past few years.
As always, take these “news” with a grain of salt and let’s have a look at the possibility of seeing an X7, X8 and even the gorgeous, yet canceled, CS model.
Note: Un-edited content to maintain the source’s original thoughts.

Why the future of the luxury car is the SUV.
Established luxury brands are getting ready to fight a new battle in the luxury segment that comes not only from their competition, but also from the enemy within…
That enemy being their equivalent luxury SUV.
Over the past few months we have seen “elite” SUV’s such as from established luxury marques such as Bentley – which if you look beyond the design, you can understand why.
Lamborghini’s URUS concept is actually quite striking in real life – it actually works from a design angle as well as a business proposition. The new Mercedes-Benz GL-Klasse is now thankfully more S-Klasse than ML-KlasseXL and we will soon be seeing an all new Range Rover.
Some are quick to make the assumption that their will be a Rolls-Royce SUV but BMW feel that a sportier X7 fills that high-end SAV role better than a RR. To make his point a photograph of a Cadillac Escalade with a Phantom front end was sent through BMW to show how ill-conceived it would be.

Industry analysts have predicted that the future for the luxury segment is within SUVs and “Downsized” luxury cars. At last weeks Beijing Auto show the onus was on the declining western market for large luxury sedans and rising market within China. But one factor was significant in both markets… The rise of the SUV.
One thing noticed is that a single luxury concept is no longer sustainable in this case, The BMW 7er can no longer stand as BMWs only high-end luxury offering. In China at least if we take the 7er into consideration the car achieves 52% of global sales , having dislodged the US from the no 1 position. The average age of a 7er owner in China is 28, nine out of ten 7ers sold in China are fully specified via BMW individual , and around five out of ten or thereabouts are the flagship 760Li . When everything is taken into consideration – The 7er does make a lot of profit for BMW.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse also offers similar contributions but with sales in China at 40%. Apply this to potential SUVs and you can see why the “elite”SUV is the next big thing. Current SUVs are now just under 60%.
A refreshed Life cycle Impulse of the 7er is due in a few weeks , although BMW did unveil the car to a selected audience in Beijing taken into consideration its now largest market and customer base, BMW have expanded the attributes to appeal to that demographic by even offering exclusive BMW Individual finishes such as Moonstone as a Matte paint option.
Although the 7er stands at the top , BMW have had previous attempts to sustain the car in the luxury segment with both the 8er coupe and illfated CS Concept car which if you take the 6er Gran Coupe, is the phoenix that arose from the CS’s wreckage. To further sustain the car and increase profitability in the high end luxury segment , BMW are investigating several concepts that can help sustain the 7er and BMW’s presence within the luxury market.
Here we look at each tabled idea and probability.
BMW 7er XLi
Probability : Medium
The 7er XLi is reusing the idea of the previous E38 but is specifically aimed at China. Using an extended wheelbase made easy by the next generation modular matrix which can be stretched to accommodate. The XLi is seen as the car that (in China) at least if they cannot stretch to the Rolls-Royce brand this would be the next available choice. The car could also follow the 3erLi and 5erLi and be built in mainland China.
BMW X7
Probability: High
The X7 is very much progressing ahead even further than two previous incarnations. The SUV in elite form is the next growth segment . The recent Bentley and Lamborghini concepts were no fluke and despite the appearance (Bentley) they point to a new segment , something the current Range Rover investigated to a surprise success. Given the delicate history of the Rolls-Royce brand , both BMW’s CEO and RR CEO are not convinced that the SUV should be added to the RR brand. The next choice of course is BMW.
The concept of an X7 is not new at BMW , both were virtually conceived under the previous E53 X5 and current E70 as potential ideas incorporating the original BMW vision for the Range Rover – unsurpassed luxury , space and even with a V12 engine. The proposed X7 is not just a super-sized X5 , some designs equal a car with a more progressively sloping roofline which enhances its luxury credentials as well as a more luxury inspired interior. An X7 being based off the X5 and using 7er technology in both material and drivetrain would be a profitable choice for BMW , protecting the RR brand and offering customers the ultimate BMW SAV in a position to take a significant advantage out of the high end luxury SUV segment.
Given the importance of the SUV within any segment. By 2017 – BMW’s entire series line wil contain an SAV/SAC model. With lower designated SAC models offering the choice of 3dr and 5dr.
These models are highly profitable to BMW both in the present and the future.
BMW Large Coupe and Cabrio
Probability - Low
A larger coupe and cabrio is not effectively needed. Thanks to the 6er covering all bases, the CS Concept car was conceived to fill this niche with something the competition could not do at the time.
BMW CS II
Probability- High
The BMW board loved the CS , so did the designers and the engineers. Under Gerhard Richter the car promised much in terms of engineering and overall scope. It was a sad day when the car was cancelled due to the economic crisis. The CS was conceived to distance the BMW brand further from the competition and build that bridge to Rolls-Royce. Competitors only offered 2dr Coupes at that time in that luxury segment, BMW were aiming to be the first with the ultimate high end luxury performance Coupe. CS was even going to be an M.
The CS was consumed by the economic crisis which lead to a Lazarus effect with the 6er Gran Coupe which incorporates many CS proposals such as BMW Individual interiors and unique passenger arrangements.
A proposal for a second generation CS to sit on top of the BMW 7er is well into conception. With the next 7er allowing flexibility for CFRP use in the cars body and under structure.
The CS II will be well advanced in taking advantage of BMW’s lightweight philosophy. Both X7 and CS II would be considerable sustainment to the 7er and both be highly profitable.
BMW X8
Probability- Medium.
An X8 is possible if it follows the same philosophy as the X6 and forthcoming X4 by being based on the equivalent model. Given the success of the X6 , an X8 is certainly an interesting proposition, however this car could actually be re-invented within the BMW i brand as the BMW i6 which is undergoing conception in Munich. i6 is effectively an SAC utilising the BMWi design language which in some cases , it can be mistaken for a raised and detail enhanced i8.

BMW M135i confirmed, M 7 Series tri-turbo diesel possible

By Brett Davis in BMW
Speaking with Car and Driver in the US recently, BMW M president Friedrich Nitschke has confirmed the BMW M135i is in the making. The production version will be “virtually identical” to the concept.
BMW revealed the M135i concept at the 2012 Genewa Motor Show earlier this year. It’s based on the 1 Series hatch, in three-door guise, with a stonking 3.0-litre TwinPower turbo straight-six under the bonnet. (Video of prototype M135i spied on the Nurburgring.)
Official specifications on the production version are yet to be confirmed, however, we can expect power levels to be slightly above the 225kW mark. Although it will use a rear-wheel drive layout, an optional all-wheel drive system is also said to be in the pipeline for overseas markets.
In other M news, Nitschke revealed that a performance 7 Series could be on the way. It’s understood the M luxury sedan would come with the new M550d 3.0-litre tri-turbo diesel straight six engine. In the M550d, and X5 M50d and X6 M50d, the engine produces 280kW and a whopping 740Nm.
The BMW M135i is slated to hit the market next year. We’ll keep you updated with official details.

BMW M550d and X5-X6 M50d M Performance tri-turbo diesels unveiled

By PerformanceDrive in BMW
BMW has unveiled the M Performance Automobiles lineup, including the BMW M550d xDrive all-wheel drive 5 Series, and the BMW X5 and X6 M50d. They feature a new triple-turbo diesel six-cylinder engine. This is the first time ever BMW M has produced a diesel model.
Yes, earlier speculations were correct. BMW’s performance M Division is introducing a new engine based on the 3.0-cylinder straight-six diesel, featuring a tri-turbo setup. This is a really exciting step for diesel, especially as it produces a proper sportscar-like 280kW of power and a tyre-tearing 740Nm of torque.
Maximum power is available from 4000-4400rpm, while maximum torque is available from just 2000rpm to 3000rpm. The engine will be available in the BMW X5 M50d, the BMW X6 M50d, and the BMW M550d xDrive 5 Series sedan and wagon. All will be backed up by an eight-speed Sports automatic transmission.
Acceleration-wise, starting with the new 5 Series, the new engine in the BMW M550d sedan smashes 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. This puts it on par with a Porsche 911, in terms of acceleration, and will make it the quickest diesel to hit the market (unfortunately, BMW Australia hasn’t announced plans for the 5 Series xDrive).
Next up on the performance front is the new BMW M550d xDrive Touring (wagon). It’s able to crack 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds. The BMW X5 M50d comes in third, at 5.3 seconds, and then the BMW X6 M50d, capable of clocking it in 5.4 seconds.
BMW M says the engine comprises of two relatively small turbochargers, and one large one. These have been optimised to provide excellent response off the mark, as well as plenty of boost up in the rev range.
One of the other main points of BMW M creating the tri-turbo diesel unit was to provide maximum performance while at the same time maintaining great fuel efficiency. The BMW M550d comes with an average fuel consumption rating of just 6.3L/100km on the EU test cylce. This is an incredible figure for the power and performance.
The BMW X5 M50d has an average rating of 7.5L/100km, while the X6 M50d offers 7.7L/100km. Remarkably, the X5 M50d fuel consumption rating is just 0.1L/100km up from the current BMW X5 xDrive30d (7.4L/100km), which comes with a derivative of the same engine producing only 180kW/540Nm.
Like M Sport options currently available, the BMW M Performance lineup comes with a range of cosmetic and sporty mechanical revisions over the normal BMW lineup.
Mechanical highlights include sports suspension, BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system which is biased to feeding torque to the rear, 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheel options, dark venting intakes for the intercooler at the front, and dark trapezoidal exhaust pipes.
The exterior also gets a bespoke M bodykit, including aggressive front and rear bumper bars, and matching side skirts. There’s also a pair of metallic grey side mirrors to further distinguish the M Performance Automobile models.
Inside, it is easy to tell these vehicles are more sporting than their conventional-variant counterparts. There’s ‘M’ touches throughout, such as subtly styled M sports seats featuring the trademark three colours, an M shift knob, M sports steering wheel, M scuff plates, and an M instrument cluster.
BMW Australia will introduce the BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d some time during the middle of this year. Pricing hasn’t been finalised, but we can expect figures somewhere in between the respective top-shelf X5 and X6, and their M counterparts:
X5 xDrive50i $134,000 and X5 M $177,800
X6 xDrive50i$149,000 and X6 M $185,000
Unfortunately, the 5 Series M550d probably won’t make it to local shores any time soon, as it is currently only planned to be built in left-hand drive form.
All models will make an official debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March.

BMW M550d M Performance tri-turbo diesel explained

By PerformanceDrive in BMW,
BMW has released an interesting video outlining the workings of the new BMW M Performance tri-turbo diesel engine, found in the BMW M550d and X5 and X6 M50d.
The new engine is, as far as we know, the first mainstream triple-turbo diesel vehicle ever made. It uses the turbochargers as a three-stage system. So the first turbo is designed to provide boost at low revs, while the second comes in during the mid-range, and the third providing top-end power.
As previously reported, the new engine will be available in Australia in the BMW X6 M50d and BMW X5 M50d from halfway through this year. Overseas, the engine will be available in the 5 Series as the M550d, fitted with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. The 5 Series model is only being made in left-hand drive at this stage.
The engine produces 280kW and 740Nm, while in the X5 M50d offering an average fuel consumption rating of 7.5L/100km, and just 6.3L/100km in the M550d sedan. It’s a very interesting new engine concept. Click play below to find out more about it.

BMW M135i prototype spotted on the Nurburgring

By Brett Davis in BMW,
BMW has been spotted testing a prototype version of the upcoming 2013 BMW M135i hatch. The new model is expected to go on sale in international markets later this year.

Although nothing is official just yet, this prototype proves BMW and M Division are working on a performance version of the new hatch. Telltale signs include twin exhaust outlets at the back, and a muscular front bumper bar with a deep chin intake.
Under the bonnet, the 2013 BMW M135i is likely to be powered by the 3.0-litre TwinPower turbocharged straight-six engine. In the M135i concept version unveiled earlier this year, power was pitched to be “more than 300hp” (224kW).
Like the concept version, this prototype appears to be in three-door form.
Click play on the video below to see how it goes on the track.

BMW Concept M135i three-door hatch set for Geneva

By PerformanceDrive in BMW
BMW is planning on expanding the new M Performance lineup, and will show a BMW Concept M135i three-door hatch at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next month as a bit of a taste on what to expect.

The short three-door body includes slightly bolstered front and rear wheel arches, sporty bumper bars with large air intakes in the front, and a set of 18-inch M alloy wheels.
BMW says that the concept features a straight-six engine using TwinPower turbo technology, producing 220kW of power. It is likely the engine will be a form of the ’35i’ 3.0-litre unit, as seen in various current BMW vehicles.
The concept is set to be a high performance, lighter weight version of the normal 1 Series hatch. It also features a rear-wheel drive layout which would make for a very fun, agile drive.
Other performance features include M brakes, and M sports lowered suspension. The concept is also likely to showcase various M highlights inside such as sports pedals and gear shifter, and a set of sports seats and an M steering wheel.
Although BMW is yet to make official confirmation, the company certainly provides hints to suggest a version will go into production soon. The company says,
“Thanks to a distinctively sports-oriented appearance, the BMW Concept M135i offers attractive prospects for the further development of the BMW 1 Series model range. At the same time, a clear signal has been given for the expansion of the new product category of BMW M Performance automobiles.”

BMW M135i officially revealed with 235kW

By Brett Davis in BMW
Like the insane BMW 1 Series M Coupe, the new BMW M135i hatch is part of BMW M’s ever-growing showroom range. It may even make its way to Australia by the end of this year.

Although not quite as powerful as the 1 M Coupe (250kW), the M135i is powered by a similar 3.0-litre TwinPower straight-six engine producing 235kW of power and 450Nm of torque. The engine can be matched up to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the rear wheels.
In terms of acceleration, the automatic version is able to smash 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds while the manual does it in 5.1. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. Despite the excellent performance, average fuel economy is rated at 7.5L/100km (8.1L/100km for the manual).

The new hot hatch will be built in three- and five-door form, however, it’s likely Australia will only get the five-door version. BMW has also said the M135i will be available with the company’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive versions will only be built in left-hand drive however.
Other highlights include a full M bodykit, M sports suspension, four-piston front and two-piston rear performance brakes, 18-inch M alloy wheels, and various M trimmings inside such as an M sports steering wheel.
The BMW M135i is expected to hit the market under the $99,900 price point of the 1 M Coupe, if it does eventually reach Australia later this year that is.

Hyundai i30 passes baboon test

Hyundai i30 passes baboon test
Hyundai i30 passes baboon test
Hyundai has put its new i30 to a unique wear-and-tear test — by parking it in the baboon enclosure at Knowsley Safari Park in the UK for a whole day.
Unsurprisingly, the test was the first of its kind to be staged by a car brand, which Hyundai put on to demonstrate the new i30's strong build quality, easy-wipe plastics and new high-quality steel bodywork.
Felicity Wood, i30 product manager at Hyundai, said: "At Hyundai we believe in new thinking, which is why we decided to take a new approach with this durability test."
Dozens of baboons reportedly descended on the car as soon as it was parked. The punishment included jumping up and down on the seats with muddy paws, jabbing dashboard buttons and eating their lunch in the car.
"These baboons are incredibly inquisitive," said David Ross, general manager at Knowsley Safari Park. "At one point there were 40 monkeys in the car, pushing it to its limits — that's 10 times the size of the average human family!"
Several baboons played with toys in the boot and most of them smeared and scraped the paintwork outside. The baboons were left alone to play with the car for 10 hours.
The Knowsley baboons apparently take an interest in all cars — and, last year, infamously jumped on Manchester United player Wayne Rooney's car.
"For a baboon, to have a car to play with for a whole day is manna from heaven!" said Knowsley's David Ross. "If you put them on any car they will scour it for the weak points and find any faults."
"The fact that it survived with only a few scrapes is testament to the way a modern Hyundai is designed and engineered," said Hyundai's Felicity Wood. "We really do give a monkey's about building tough cars!"
"I've seen thousands of cars pass through this enclosure get mobbed by monkeys, and none have lasted the distance as well as this Hyundai," said Knowsley's David Ross.
Hyundai says the car will be analysed by engineers and some of the findings will be used to inform its R&D department to help develop future cars.

BMW DTM revealed

V8 Supercar drifting
BMW has unveiled the car that it will mark its return to the DTM in 2012. The matte black M3 DTM Concept was revealed at BMW headquarters in Munich, along with the presentation of first two drivers factory-backed drivers.

Two-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx (38) will return to full-time racing after BMW pulled the WTCC pin at the end of the 2010 season.

“The BMW M3 DTM looks fantastic,” said Priaulx. “I can hardly wait to get to know the car better in the coming tests, to contribute to its development, and ultimately to sit in the cockpit for the first DTM race in 2012.”

Priaulx will be joined once again by his 2010 WTCC team-mate, 27-year-old Augusto Farfus, who has also enjoyed success with BMW. Farfus has notched up 15 wins in the WTCC, along with outright victory in the 2010 Nurburgring 24 Hours.

DTM regulations require engines to be fitted with an air restrictor, meaning the DT M3’s V8 will pump out around 353kW. It should hit 100km/h in 3.0sec and a top speed of 300km/h.

“It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,” said Klaus Draeger, BMW’s Motrosport Director. ”Next year, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge.

The DTM comeback sees BMW return to its roots. We have enjoyed great success in production car racing in the past, and I am convinced we will follow on in 2012 where we left off. Everyone at BMW Motorsport is working hard to ensure we get off to a successful start next season.”

The 2012 DTM calendar has not yet been announced.
