Subcompact Car: Toyota Yaris

Toyota is a dominant force in J.D. Power's dependability study in 2012: Eight of the 14 vehicles to win top honors are made by Toyota. The Yaris, which made its debut in 2007 and is Toyota's top-seller in Europe, competes with cars such as the Scion xD and the Honda Fit, which took second and third places, respectively, in the subcompact category. The diminutive Yaris gets 38 mpg highway, and it comes standard with traction control and vehicle-stability control. In recent years, its fuel efficiency and safety features have been upgraded.

Entry Premium Car: Lexus ES 350 and Lincoln MKZ

The Lexus ES 350 and Lincoln MKZ tied for the win in the entry premium category, with the Acura TL ranking second. Overall, Lexus was the most dependable brand in J.D. Power's 2012 survey, and the ES is making its fifth appearance as an award winner. Along with Porsche, it was the only brand to have fewer than 100 problems reported per 100 vehicles. The MKZ is unusual in that it received mediocre quality ratings in J.D. Power's initial assessment of it back in 2009, when the car was new — usually a predictor of long-term dependability — but it still got stellar dependability ratings.

Large Car: Buick Lucerne

The best of the big guys, the Lucerne is Buick's sole top-ranking vehicle in the 2012 dependability study and one of only two for General Motors. Buick, which doesn't enjoy an image of dependability among consumers, is actually more reliable than several other automakers with better reputations, such as Honda, Subaru and Nissan, according to study results. The Lucerne also gets glowing reviews from MSN Autos users: "There is nothing I dislike about the Lucerne," one reviewer wrote. Actually, there was one thing: "Buick has made a mistake in discontinuing the Lucerne for 2012 with no replacement."

Compact Car: Toyota Prius

Although the Prius hybrid was involved in one of the biggest vehicle recalls of all time in 2010, it led the compact-car category in the J.D. Power study this year. This is also an accomplishment seeing as hybrid technology is newer, which means it tends to have more kinks. The Prius was the first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid when it entered the Japanese market in 1997, and today it's the best-selling hybrid worldwide. Even with electric cars infiltrating its ranks, it still gets impressive mileage: up to 51 mpg highway.

Midsize Car: Ford Fusion

Smaller than the Ford Five Hundred (now called the Taurus) but bigger than the Focus, the Fusion debuted in 2006, inspired by the Ford 427 concept car. It, along with the Explorer and the Lincoln MKZ, are Ford's most reliable vehicles, according to J.D. Power. The Fusion also scores well in terms of safety: It received the highest ratings in five out of seven categories in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal offset crash test. The Mitsubishi Galant and the Toyota Camry were runners-up in the midsize car category, earning the second and third spots, respectively.

Compact Sporty Car: Scion tC

The tC is one of two Scions to get top honors in J.D. Power's 2012 dependability survey. Considering that only four Scion models are in production, those aren't bad statistics. The Scion, produced by Toyota, is geared toward younger drivers, with options such as subwoofers and yellow paint. The tC is Scion's more subtle 2-door sports coupe, whereas the cube-shaped xB, also on this year's dependability list, is the most recognizable Scion, perhaps because it cuts such a large and distinctive profile. Competitors to the tC include the MINI Cooper and the Volkswagen GTI, which were the runners-up in the category.

Midsize Premium Car: Hyundai Genesis

Hyundai, not the first manufacturer that leaps to mind on the subject of dependability, topped the midsize premium car category with its Genesis, a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan. The real shocker, however, is that it muscled out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which came in second. The Volvo S80 took third. MSN Autos reviewers — among them former Lexus, Cadillac and Mercedes owners — were equally enthralled with the Genesis. "Hyundai has come a LONG way. Good job!" one wrote. It also gets high ratings for comfort: Its cabin is larger than those of the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series.

Is Your Car Dependable?

According to J.D. Power and Associates, 2012 is a banner year for automakers, with overall vehicle dependability better than ever. Each year, the research firm determines which are the most reliable vehicles on American roads and publishes the list in its Vehicle Dependability Study. Reliability is gauged by looking at the number of problems reported by owners of 3-year-old cars — in this instance, 2009 models — to see how they're faring after a few years of wear and tear. It seems that even though 2009 was a tough year for automakers because of the recession, quality did not suffer. Here are the most dependable cars on our roads:

The Mazda 6 cruises into 2012 with no significant changes.

Introduction

Practical doesn't have to be another word for boring -- the 2012 Mazda 6 is proof. This good-looking hauler is one of the more fun-loving choices in the family sedan segment, with nimble handling that adds enjoyment to mundane commutes. Add its affordable price and comfortable cabin to the mix and you get a car that covers all the bases.
With the 6, it's clear that importance was placed on creating an involving driving experience. It offers one of the best driving positions in the segment, with relatively high seat placement that gives you an expansive view of the road. Handling is keener than that of most others in this class, and the buttoned-down chassis results in a ride quality that feels more European than Japanese. Other pluses include a spacious interior and a large trunk.
The Mazda 6 does have a few minor shortcomings, the most notable being middling fuel economy and the cabin's occasionally cheap plastics. At the same time, there are some newer family sedans that might hold more appeal. The smooth-riding Hyundai Sonata is worth a look, as is the undeniably handsome Kia Optima -- both come chock-full of unexpected standard features and are more affordable than the 6. The Volkswagen Passat offers European refinement, and the sporty Nissan Altima, spacious Honda Accord and engaging Ford Fusion are also fine choices. Despite these talented rivals, the 2012 Mazda 6 is still a very worthy pick, especially for those who love to drive.

The 2012 Mazda 6 is available in six trim levels: i Sport, i Touring, i Touring Plus, i Grand Touring, s Touring Plus and s Grand Touring. Models with the "i" prefix come with the four-cylinder engine, while models with the "s" prefix come with the V6.
The i Sport comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, a manually height-adjustable driver seat, full power accessories, keyless entry, air-conditioning, cruise control, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo system with an auxiliary audio jack.
The i Touring model adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a trip computer, a power driver seat, an in-dash six-CD changer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, upgraded interior trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.
Opting for the i Touring Plus will get you a sunroof, a blind-spot monitoring system, electroluminescent instrument gauges and outside mirrors with integrated turn signals. The i Grand Touring model adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, a multi-information display and a 10-speaker Bose sound system. The s Touring Plus model is outfitted identically to the i Touring Plus, except for the engine, transmission and some exterior trim. The s Grand Touring adds 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels.
We expect one of the more popular options will be the Technology package, which is available for Grand Touring models. It includes automatic xenon headlights, automatic wipers, heated outside mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors, satellite radio, driver memory settings and a power passenger seat. A voice-activated navigation system is available only for Grand Touring models and comes with a 7-inch touchscreen display and real-time traffic. Stand-alone options vary in availability with trim levels and include many of the above-listed features as well as a rear spoiler, a chrome fuel-filler door and remote engine start.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Mazda 6 i versions are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 167 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the i Sport. A five-speed automatic with manual shift control is offered on the i Sport and is the only choice available on i Touring, i Touring Plus and i Grand Touring models.
Mazda 6 s models are powered by a 3.7-liter V6 that produces 272 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque and are available only with a six-speed automatic. In Edmunds testing, a V6 model reached 60 mph from a standstill in a quick 6.5 seconds, while the four-cylinder automatic required a more pedestrian 9.1 seconds.
The EPA estimates fuel economy at 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 24 mpg in combined driving for the four-cylinder i Sport with the five-speed manual. The Mazda 6 i models with the automatic are rated at 22/31/25 mpg and the V6-powered versions stand at 18/27/21 mpg, both of which are at the low end for this segment.

Safety

Standard safety features for all 2012 Mazda 6 models include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In Edmunds brake testing, both the i and s Grand Touring models came to a stop from 60 mph in about 125 feet.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Mazda 6 its highest score of "Good" for frontal-offset and side impacts, while roof strength tests yielded a second-best "Acceptable" rating.

The aesthetic within the 2012 Mazda 6's cabin is thoroughly modern, with lots of curves and sweeping lines, and the car's red electroluminescent gauges are a handsome addition. The center stack forms a graceful arch; it looks great, but some of its controls are less intuitive than those seen in competing models. There's ample headroom and legroom all around, and the backseats are especially spacious, comfortably accommodating even the most long-limbed passengers. If you've got a narrow build, though, you might find the wide front seats lacking in lateral support.
Though the cabin design is attractive, the 6's interior is marred by the presence of some low-grade plastics, and more expensive trim levels come with odd black-and-silver accents that may be a turn-off for some. It's also worth noting that the sound system's performance trails that of others in this class; even the upgraded Bose system could disappoint some listeners. On the plus side, the Mazda 6's 16.6-cubic-foot trunk is one of the biggest in its class, while the trunk's unobtrusive hinge mechanisms and the 60/40-split-folding rear seats further enhance cargo-hauling capabilities.

The 2012 Mazda 6 stands apart from most other family sedans on the strength of its nimble handling. It enters curves more confidently than the Honda Accord, and ranks almost as highly on the fun-to-drive meter as the class-leading Nissan Altima. Its athletic demeanor comes with a ride quality that can be a bit taut, however, and road noise is also more prominent. Still, neither is particularly bothersome, even when riding on the big 18-inch wheels.
Most drivers will find the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder to be a suitable match, but those who want gutsier performance will find that the higher Mazda 6 s trim levels offer a significant increase in power as well as improved handling with wider tires. Unfortunately, this added performance is tempered by a transmission that is slow to react in both automatic and manual modes.

Mazda has unveiled a special edition MX-5 called the Venture Edition.
Available as both a soft-top and Roadster Coupé, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Venture Edition features a series of interior and exterior styling upgrades and attractive pricing, starting at £18,995.

The Venture Edition is the first Mazda MX-5 to feature standard-fit satellite navigation. The integrated Sanyo TomTom unit includes a 5.8-inch touchscreen and mapping for 45 countries, as well as iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.
It also gets Havana Brown heated leather seats, climate control, piano black interior inserts, and a leather steering wheel with contrasting grey stitching as standard. Cruise control is also a first for the 1.8-litre soft-top.
There are three colour choices, all available at no extra charge. Radiant Ebony Mica and Crystal White Pearlescent are unique to the Venture Edition, while Metropolitan Grey Mica carries over from the regular MX-5 range.
Light, gunmetal grey 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, a chrome front grille, piano black ‘fashion bars’ and ‘Venture Edition’ badging complete the upgrades.

Soft-top or Roadster Coupé

The soft-top convertible version of the Venture Edition is based on the existing 124bhp 1.8-litre SE, while the Roadster Coupé folding hard-top is based on the 158bhp 2.0-litre Sport Tech model.
This should mean 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds and 7.6 seconds respectively, plus claimed economy of 39.8mpg with 167g/km CO2 emissions - or 36.2mpg with 181g/km CO2.

At £22,285, the Roadster Coupé variant is especially good value, as it’s actually £705 less than the £22,990 Mazda charges for the regular 2.0-litre Sport Tech.

By comparison the £1,005 premium over the regular 1.8 SE you’ll pay for the £18,995 Venture Edition Soft-Top seems a little steep – although less so if you consider the cost of a normal 1.8 SE with air conditioning at £18,540. Either way, you are getting a lot of equipment for your money.
MX-5 special editions are generally quite popular, so be sure to check the Venture Edition out soon if you’re interested.

Hyundai introduces 2013 Elantra Coupe

Over the past few years Hyundai has redefined itself with improvements in quality and expressive vehicle design, and has cemented its sporting credentials with the introduction of a pair of sport compact cars. Both the Genesis Coupe and the Veloster have drawn attention and praise for their styling and performance. Now, a third new design is being introduced into Hyundai's sport compact stable: The 2013 Elantra Coupe.

The Elantra Coupe joins the recently redesigned four-door Elantra sedan and the new 2013 five-door Elantra GT hatchback in the Elantra lineup. Like its sedan and hatchback counterparts, the Elantra Coupe has been styled with Hyundai's "Fluidic Sculpture" design philosophy, which imitates the graceful forms created in nature by the interaction of wind or tide against sand. "From that you get a a lot of natural arcs and lines," explains designer Andre Hudson, "which is nice to look at and has a flowing feel to it, even when standing still."

The Elantra Coupe's voluptuous body is adorned with fog lights up front, chrome-tipped dual exhaust at the rear and available 17-inch wheels under its bulbous wheel arches. A 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder engine resides under the sloping hood and produces an estimated 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque. The engine can be paired to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual control.

Inside, the Elantra Coupe comes with a standard AM/FM/CD six-speaker audio system with satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and input jacks for Apple iPod, USB and auxiliary components. The Elantra Coupe can also be had with leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power sunroof, upgraded audio, and a navigation system with a seven-inch touch-screen display and backup camera.

In addition to its wealth of interior features, the 2013 Elantra Coupe protects occupants with safety technologies including vehicle stability management, electronic stability control and antilock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The Elantra Coupe also comes equipped with a full array of airbags including dual front, side curtain and front seat-mounted side-impact airbags.

Although Canadian pricing and sales dates have not yet been divulged, one certainty is that Hyundai is finally ready to challenge the well-established competition within the entry-level coupe segment. Once it arrives, the 2013 Elantra Coupe will compete with other such two-doors as the Honda Civic Coupe, the Scion TC and the Kia Forte Koup.

GMC updates Acadia full-size crossover for 2013

GMC's full-size Acadia crossover vehicle was introduced in 2007 and has now been significantly revised for the 2013 model year. With its updated styling and improvements in interior refinement and safety, the 2013 Acadia is now a more formidable challenger for the other vehicles in its segment.

The 2012 Acadia sports a new front grille as well as diffused LED running lamps paired with either standard projector beam headlights or optional HID headlights. Other new styling features include redesigned taillights, new wrap-around rear glass, a new rear spoiler, and new 18- and 19-inch wheels.

Inside, the 2013 Acadia features upgraded soft-touch materials, French stitching and even ambient red lighting along the dashboard. In SLT trim, the Acadia's interior features aluminum accents on centre console, the doors and the dashboard.

Interior features also include a rear-seat entertainment system, a Dual SkyScape sunroof, a rear-view camera and GMC's Colour Touch Radio, which makes use of touch screen controls for the vehicle's infotainment options.

All 2013 Acadias are powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine with direct injection that produces 288 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission routes power to the front wheels, with an optional all-wheel drive system also available. Towing capacity for the 2013 Acadia is a robust 2,268 kg (5,000 pounds).

When it comes to safety features, the 2013 Acadia raises the bar with GMC's new front centre air bag system, which deploys an airbag between the driver and front passenger. The system's purpose is to protect the front seat occupant (driver or passenger) on the opposing, non-struck side of an impact.

Other safety technologies include a rear cross traffic alert and a side blind zone alert. Both systems use radar technology to monitor the driver's potential blind spots and can provide visible and audible warnings in order to help prevent a collision.

Pricing and availability have not yet been divulged, but more details about the 2013 GMC Acadia will be announced closer to the vehicle's on-sale date later this year.

Chevrolet Orlando 1LT Road Test Review

Love the Cruze, but need more room? Chevy's got the answer in its new 7-seat Orlando. It's the best-priced 7-occupant ride out there, but it's not all about price.
No, like the Cruze, the Orlando impresses in so many other ways. Like performance, handling, ride quality, refinement, features, fuel economy, etc. It's a compact crossover that fights way above its belt.
For three rows of seats the Orlando is small, measuring 4.66 meters (183.6 inches) long and 1.83 meters (72.2 inches) wide, which makes it a tad longer and wider than Kia's Rondo, the only other compact that seats 7, albeit at a higher price as that feature is optional with the Korean (and I'm not counting Mitsubishi's Outlander as its optional third row is an afterthought at best). Mazda's 5 seats 6, which may be enough for you. You'll need to decide that. It has the convenience of side sliders, along with the stigma of a minivan. Toyota's RAV4 no longer has a third row, a good thing if you ever tried to sit back there.

No such problem in the Orlando. I took opportunity to climb in back and have a seat, and while I'm no Jeremy Lin (I was going to say Wilt Chamberlain, but then you'd know my age… how about Yao Ming as Lin isn't all that tall for an NBA player) I'm a 5'8" adult and had no problems with head, shoulder, knee or foot room.

Try to put something behind me and you'll come up short, mind you, as there's possibly only room for a skinny briefcase and a grocery bag of baguettes, or two. Chevy measures it at 101 litres (3.6 cubic feet). You can flop the third row forward in a 50/50 split to create more space, of course, 739 litres (26.1 cubic feet) to be exact. And ultimately, 1,594 litres (56.3 cubic feet) is on hand if you drop all the seats into the floor. Sizeable for sure, but strangely not as accommodating as the Rondo despite its larger overall size.
I like the Orlando more, though. It's a styling thing, probably. Am I really that fickle? Sigh. I suppose. I like the way the Orlando looks. It's a cute, pudgy little crossover, somewhat van-like from the front and more SUV-like from the back. It's not as tall as the Kia, which makes for slightly sleeker styling, and probably is the root cause of the cargo capacity conundrum.
More importantly, the Orlando is more fuel-efficient with an estimated rating of 10.1 L/100km city and 6.7 highway for the 6-speed manual transmission and 10.6 city and 6.9 highway with its 6-speed automatic, the version I tested. The Rondo? 10.6 and 7.5 respectively with its base four-cylinder, and it only comes with a 4-speed automatic.
The Orlando gets the manual in base LS, plus 1LT and 2LT trim levels. The automatic is available on LT trim levels and is standard with the top-line LTZ. The direct-injection 1.8-litre engine makes more power than the Rondo's base unit too, at 174 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. There's no V6 option, and honestly it doesn't really need it. Step on the go pedal and the Orlando pulls forward quickly enough to fulfill most needs, let alone wants. It passes nicely when up to speed, and really only drags its heels when starting out on steep grades filled with passengers and gear. Even then it's hardly embarrassing, keeping up with traffic nicely.
I found the Orlando just as pleasant in the curves. Possibly more so. Like the Cruze it manages corners well, showing stability through quick side-to-side transitions. It's taller and therefore displays some body lean, but its independent MacPherson strut front and compound crank Watts Z-link rear suspension system finds a nice balance between comfort and performance.
My Orlando was in 1LT trim, which is just over base. It was upgraded with 16-inch alloys, although 18-inch rims, offered on the 2LT and standard on the LTZ, would probably improve its slalom time, if such things matter to you. I'd be more interested in the comfort and convenience features that come with either upgrade.
The 2LT gets such niceties as a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, a USB port, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity (I'm told Bluetooth will be standard soon), tire pressure monitoring, and fog lights, whereas the LTZ ups the ante with automatic climate control, heated seats, a 6-way powered driver's seat, remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a cargo cover and net, chrome body side mouldings, and a chrome strip on the door handles, not to mention the automatic transmission thrown in, standard.
There's a price for all that goodness mind you, $25,090 including freight for the 2LT and $29,990 for the LTZ. My 1LT was more palatable to the pocketbook at $23,790, while adding air conditioning, power-adjustable heated mirrors, cruise control, telescopic steering, a centre console with closed storage, privacy glass, floor mats, premium cloth seats, and body-colour door handles on top of all the base LS model's standard features, which include powered windows with front auto-up/down, remote keyless entry, tilt steering, automatic headlamps, variable intermittent wipers, a driver information centre, OnStar telematics, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio with an auxiliary input, a cool centre stack storage bin behind flip-up audio faceplate, a flip-down child viewing mirror, rear washer/wiper, illuminated vanity mirrors, anti-theft alarm, block heater, and more for only 21,490, including freight. An automatic transmission on LT models (no such option with the base LS) adds $1,450 to the window sticker.
All Orlando trim levels get standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, traction and stability control, and a full assortment of airbags. If you'd rather wear a bowtie than a red oval belt buckle on your grille, just understand that that both the Rondo and Orlando are made in Korea. Both have excellent warranties, although Chevy's powertrain coverage stretches 60,000 farther to 160,000 kilometers. Kia will argue back that its basic coverage gives you two extra years and 40,000 additional kilometers.
For me, the decision comes down to overall value, and what you get for your money right now. The Orlando represents an all-new design with state-of-the-art engineering under its hood, resulting in superb fuel economy without sacrificing performance. Its claim to lowest priced 7-seat status is a bonus too, and while it will never become an IIHS top safety pick (it's not available south of the 49th where the IIHS resides) the Cruze is at the top of this class for safety, boding well for the Orlando.
All in all, the 2012 Chevrolet Orlando is a great compact family hauler.

Mazda5 GT Luxury Road Test Review

Ever since it was introduced to North America in 2005, the Mazda5 has been a car that makes a lot of sense. The rest of the world had already figured that out, and had been enjoying the benefits of this mini-minivan in first-generation form since 1999, under the name Mazda Premacy.
North America got the Mazda5 in its second-generation form, with one less seat than world-market cars due to safety regulations (here it's a six-seater, while elsewhere it can accommodate seven using a third jump seat that deploys between the two middle-row seats). When I drove a second-generation model back in 2006 I commented that it was versatile, practical and fun to drive, and these comments apply equally to the third-generation model introduced for the 2012 model year.
The new Mazda5 retains the same overall packaging as the previous model, with three-row seating for six, twin sliding doors in the back, and a tall-wagon profile riding on stretched Mazda3 underpinnings. Responding to accusations that the previous-generation vehicle could be somewhat underpowered when fully-loaded, the new Mazda5 gets a slightly bigger engine: a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder instead of a 2.3-litre unit. The new engine only makes a few more horsepower (157 horsepower compared to the previous 153 horsepower), but it produces substantially more torque (163 lb-ft versus the previous 148 lb-ft) which translates into much better get-up-and-go when coming off the line or trying to pass.
Happily, the increased power doesn't come at any cost to fuel economy. Indeed, partly thanks to a new 6-speed manual transmission in place of the previous 5-speed, highway fuel economy is actually improved. An automatic transmission is available as an option, but remains a 5-speed as before. City/highway fuel economy with the manual transmission is rated at 9.7 / 6.8 L/100km, versus 9.5 / 6.7 L/100km with the automatic.
Outside, the styling of the Mazda5 has been thoroughly revised, trading the somewhat minimalist appearance of the previous car for a rather highly-styled attempt to make the basic boxy shape look dynamic. The styling is based on Mazda's Nagare design language, which produced several interesting concept cars but according to Mazda probably won't be used on any production vehicles after the Mazda5. Nagare has been described as "a celebration of surface language" with bodylines that "flow like liquid" (and if that makes you think "Hey, that sounds like Hyundai's fluidic sculpture," you're not alone).
On the Mazda5 the Nagare concept show up most obviously in a series of wave patterns stamped into the sides, flowing from the front fender bulge and across the doors, and then blending into the taillights at the back. The taillights themselves have been moved down from their previous location in the D-pillars to a more conventional location under the rear window, while at the front the Mazda5 has been given Mazda's now-obligatory smiling grille. Opinion in our office was divided as to how successful the new look is, but regardless of whether the waves are entirely your thing, the Mazda5 is certainly more sporty looking than a regular minivan.
It's also a lot sportier to drive than a regular minivan, which is hardly surprising when you consider that it's based on the very crisp-handling Mazda3. While Mazda5's extra length, height and weight compared to the Mazda3 do take the fine edge off the handling, this is still a very enjoyable machine to drive - the steering is accurate and responsive, and the extra torque in the new generation model means that even when equipped with the automatic as our test car was, you're never left wanting for power.
From a utilitarian standpoint, the Mazda5 does give up some points to full-size minivans, but it is still entirely adequate for how most people actually use their minivans: Thanks to second-row seats that are almost as comfortable as the first row (and have stowage compartments underneath) the Mazda5 can haul a family of four and all their luggage in superb comfort, and when needed it can bring along a couple of extra guests in reasonable comfort while still leaving room for several bags of groceries. If you've got five people and some luggage, that combination can also be accommodated thanks to the split-folding third-row seats.
The interior is built mostly of hard plastics, but has cloth door uppers and a clean uncluttered look. Mostly uncluttered, anyway: I thought the peaked hood above the instruments was a little busy looking, and the test car's audio system had a lot of buttons including a dedicated knob for audio settings that sits exactly where you'd expect to find the tuner dial - a little rationalizing here would go a long way.
The Mazda5 is available in two basic trim levels - GS and GT - with additional equipment packages available for each. The base GS carries a suggested retail price of $21,895 (plus $1,795 in delivery charges) and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, cloth seats, tilt and telescoping steering, rain sensing wipers, power locks and windows, keyless entry, air conditioning with automatic climate control, and four-speaker AM/FM/CD audio with auxiliary input and MP3 capability. A Convenience Package adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, cruise control, trip computer, leather-wrapped steering wheel and anti-theft alarm system, and at $845 I can't imagine many GS buyers not adding this package. The automatic transmission is a $1,200 standalone option available across the lineup
Our test car was a GT model, which carries a suggested sticker of $24,395 (plus $1,200 for the automatic) and includes 17-inch alloys, tire-pressure monitoring, fog lights, heated body-coloured side mirrors, a rear roof spoiler, xenon headlights, an upgraded six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and six-CD changer, heated seats, plus pretty much all the gear from the GS model's convenience package. For a top-of-the-line experience, GT models can be ordered with our test car's $1,790 Luxury Package, and this adds a power moonroof, centre fold-out table/cargo bin and leather seating.
The leather setting has tasteful red piping and I found that it really did bump things up a notch, giving the Mazda5 a nicely refined ambience inside. I wasn't quite so impressed with the Bluetooth setup, which like other Mazdas I've tried lately (and some other Japanese marques, too) tended to disconnect my phone in favour of the Bluetooth streaming audio. The phone was easy enough to reconnect and would work fine after that, but it could be a bit of a nuisance if a call came through before I remembered to go through the process. I'd also like to see Mazda put a second setting on the seat heaters.
Overall, however, the Mazda5 is a brilliant concept and one that still makes plenty of sense. It seems that other manufacturers are starting to cotton on to this fact too, because where the Mazda5 once stood nearly alone it is now gaining some competition, including the upcoming Ford C-Max and, in Canada at least, the Kia Rondo and Chevrolet Orlando. As the small people-carrier market heats up, it's nice to know that a car as good as the Mazda5 is leading the way.

If you’re one of the few that actually do have $800,000 that you can part with without any second thoughts, then this 1995 Ferrari F50, which is being sold by its owner for around $788,888, is one item that you could actually buy. Sure, it might be 15 years old, but how many Ferrari F50s do you actually see romping around the streets these days? We’re thinking not a lot. And it’s not like this one has been used and abused by the owner. On the contrary, it’s got some pretty new and nifty modifications on it including an iPod stereo-system and subwoofers.
On top of that, it’s got some suave Alcantara leather seats, a set of black rims, calipers with red logos, an Italian flag striping on the wing and a Tubi exhaust system. Best of all, for a car that’s been around the block quite a few times; it’s got a surprisingly low mileage of just a shade under 7,500 miles. So there you have it folks. A 1995 Ferrari F50 for three-quarters of a million. Any takers?

Mazda8 dan CX7 Pimpin Penjualan Mazda Bulan Januari

PT. Mazda Motor Indonesia (MMI) mengawali tahun 2012 dengan baik dibawah kinerja gemilang Mazda8 dan CX7. Mazda8 dan CX7 berhasil mencatatkan rekor penjualan bulanan tertinggi selama bulan Januari 2012. Penjualan CX-7, yang merupakan five-seater SUV Mazda, mencapai 82 unit. Sementara itu, penjualan MPV premium terbaru dari Mazda, yakni Mazda8, mencapai 77 unit.
Hasil ini membuat Mazda optimistis. MMI di awal bulan Januari telah mengumumkan targetnya untuk membukukan penjualan total sebanyak 12,000 di tahun 2012.
Tahun ini, Mazda juga menyiapkan tiga model baru untuk diluncurkan. Ketiganya adalah Mazda RX-8 Spirit R, Mazda All New BT-50, dan Mazda CX-5.

New Mazda CX-5 Akan Meluncur di Indonesia Tahun 2012

Baru Aston Martin Zagato akan disajikan dalam produksi akhir dari Auto Show di Jenewa bulan depan.
Ini akan menjadi mobil eksotis dengan V12, bagian atas kisaran Aston Martin Vantage tur, dan harga yang ditetapkan sebesar £ 330.000, atau "sepele" sebesar $ 520 000.
Ini dirancang terutama dengan proses dan teknologi yang dikembangkan untuk Aston Martin One-77, seperti panel bodi dibentuk dengan tangan dari komposit aluminium dan serat karbon dirahasiakan oleh produsen di Gaydon , di Inggris.

Mobil baru memperingati ulang tahun ke-50 Zagato DB4GT asli, Aston-Martin yang sederhana menggambarkan sebagai "sebuah karya dan inspirasi dari Zagato baru" dalam sebuah pernyataan.
Dua prototipe dari Zagato selesai pada musim semi 2011 dan kedua 24 selesai jam Nürburgring. Pembalap terbiasa dengan lingkungan kinerja tinggi tetapi lebih spartan dan fungsional. Tapi bukan dari dua Aston Martin. Prototipe pertama, kembar kedua, memenangkan Concours d'Elegance Villa d'Este otomatis.

Vettel bahkan lebih kuat pada 2012, menurut bos Red Bull


Berlin - Sebastian Vettel memiliki potensi untuk menjadi lebih kuat musim ini dan memenuhi syarat untuk gelar juara dunia ketiga berturut-turut di Formula 1, menurut Dietrich Mateschitz, pendiri dan CEO dari pemilik perusahaan Banteng tim Austria Merah dengan nama yang sama.
"Dia masih memiliki potensi besar di depannya karena pengalamannya, keteguhan dan dominasi dalam situasi yang berbeda akan sepenuhnya mengekspresikan diri," kata bos Vettel dalam sebuah wawancara dengan majalah Jerman Speedweek, dirilis Selasa.

"Keterampilan Konsentrasinya sudah bahwa kekuatanmu tidak seberapa, tetapi ini akan menjadi lebih kuat di lomba karena ia memahami lebih baik kompleksitas dari olahraga pada umumnya," tambahnya.
Setelah satu dunia ganda (driver dan konstruktor) dan meskipun perubahan aturan, Mateschitz yakin timnya masih akan menjadi patokan pada tahun 2012 dengan "keseimbangan kekuatan identik dengan musim lalu."
Dia juga mengharapkan pertempuran antara Vettel lebih ketat dan rekan setimnya, veteran (35 tahun) Australia Mark Webber: "Sangat penting bagi tim bahwa keduanya cepat dan berjuang dengan cara yang sama."

Pada 24, Vettel memenangkan gelar keduanya dari juara dunia dengan statistik menjengkelkan: 11 kemenangan, 15 pole position (rekor) dan 122 poin di atas yang kedua, pembalap Inggris Jenson Button, Webber finis ketiga.

Sejak Peter Schreyer - desainer mantan Audi - mengambil alih desain di Kia, jelas bahwa merek Korea Selatan telah mengambil botol. Atau bersinar. Latest ilustrasi, sedan Kia baru yang akan diluncurkan pada tanahnya.
Kia Motors pada Senin mengumumkan sketsa resmi pertama dari sedan masa depan "besar" belakang-drive. Untuk saat dénomée KH, itu membangkitkan harapan besar menuju ke arah produsen. "Ini sedan baru niscaya akan menjadi pemimpin dalam jangkauan kami secara global," harapan Soon-Nam Lee, Direktur Pemasaran Internasional Kia.
Mobil ini awalnya akan diluncurkan di Korea Selatan selama babak pertama. Peluncuran tanggal di pasar lain belum dikonfirmasi.
Desain "khas, modern dan klasik diungkapkan melalui fitur-fitur canggih, dikombinasikan dengan bahasa desain teknis canggih dan dinamis saat ini Kia untuk membuat kendaraan yang menonjol dengan jelas dari pesaingnya," kata Kia sendiri.
Dengan kata lain, katakanlah bahwa ada kisi-kisi Kia biasa yang telah dicangkokkan lampu yang membentang diagonal pada sayap depan. Sebuah kecenderungan estetika ditemukan di banyak mobil untuk beberapa waktu. Tenda adalah luas. Garis relatif sederhana di sisi, gagang pintu diskrit. Para garis atap dan belakang, krom berlapis, sangat fluida.
Ini KH Kia ini sejalan dengan prototipe GT, disajikan di Frankfurt September lalu dan memiliki V6 3,3 L. Tidak ada rincian tentang mesin KH telah diberikan selama ini.
KH disajikan sebagai mobil mewah, tampilan klasik dan memberikan gambaran kompetisi. Tidak palsu. Dan tidak gila.

Akhirnya, pada tanggal 03 Februari 2012 lalu, AIC chapter Surabaya resmi didirikan yang ditandai dengan Gathering pertama di Ciputra World (CIWO), kota Surabaya.
